The programme
How the diploma works
The Diploma in Pharmacy is a two-year, full-time course. You study 11 subjects, 10 of them with a practical exam.
After the second-year exam you complete 500 hours of practical training. With the diploma and the training certificate, you can apply to register as a pharmacist.

500 hours, including at least 250 hours of dispensing.
Register as a pharmacist
Apply online to the Uttar Pradesh Pharmacy Council at apps.uppc.in with your marksheets, diploma and training certificate.
Start work, or study further
Registration is what allows you to work as a pharmacist. You can also join B.Pharm in the second year.
Exit exam. No exit exam is required for registration at present. On 20 February 2026 the Pharmacy Council of India asked state pharmacy councils to register diploma holders under Section 32(2) of the Pharmacy Act, 1948.
The Diploma in Pharmacy is the only programme Banaras Institute of Pharmacy is approved to run.

The syllabus is set by the Pharmacy Council of India under its Education Regulations 2020 (ER-2020). Examinations are held by the Board of Technical Education, Uttar Pradesh.

Practical training: 500 hours
At least 500 hours over at least three months, of which at least 250 hours are spent dispensing, at a training place approved under the Pharmacy Council's rules. It can start after the second-year exam, and the diploma is issued once it is complete.
After the diploma
Where it leads
Registered pharmacist
Dispense medicines and advise patients in a retail or hospital pharmacy, after registering with the Uttar Pradesh Pharmacy Council.
Your own medical store
A registered pharmacist can hold a retail drug licence (Forms 20 and 21), issued by the Food Safety and Drug Administration, UP.
Government pharmacist
Pharmacist posts in Uttar Pradesh government health services are filled through UPSSSC. Each advertisement sets its own conditions.
Pharmaceutical industry
Production, packaging and quality-control work in manufacturing units, where medicines are made, tested and released in batches.
Medical representative
Represent pharmaceutical companies to doctors and chemists. Several of the institute's former students work in this role.
B.Pharm from the second year
Lateral entry through AKTU's UPTAC counselling, with at least 45% in D.Pharm (40% for SC and ST candidates).
