The institute
The college, the course, and its leadership
Banaras Institute of Pharmacy was opened in 2019 by the Purwanchal Educational Trust, on its campus at Babatpur, Varanasi. It teaches the two-year Diploma in Pharmacy, approved by the Pharmacy Council of India and affiliated to the Board of Technical Education, Uttar Pradesh, across four departments that each have a laboratory and teaching staff of their own. The diploma is the qualification on which a State Pharmacy Council grants registration, and registration is what allows a graduate to practise. The institute is chaired by Dr. Chandrika Rai, a retired officer of the Indian Police Service, and led on the academic side by Dr. A. K. Srivastava, formerly of the Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering & Technology at IIT (BHU), Varanasi.

The programme
Diploma in Pharmacy (D.Pharm)
The Diploma in Pharmacy is two years, full-time, and entered through JEECUP. It is taught across four departments — Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacognosy and Pharmacology — each with a laboratory of its own. With 500 hours of practical training after it, the diploma qualifies a graduate to register as a pharmacist.
10+2 (Intermediate) with Physics and Chemistry, and either Biology or Mathematics.

The syllabus is set by the Pharmacy Council of India: 11 subjects over two years, 10 of them with a practical. The four core subjects, Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacognosy and Pharmacology, each have a department and a laboratory of their own.

Open lawns and brick planters surround the teaching blocks. The medicinal plants used in Pharmacognosy practicals are grown in the campus herbal garden.
After the diploma
Where a D.Pharm can take you
The diploma is a working qualification in its own right, and a recognised first step for students who intend to go further.
- Community pharmacyD.Pharm is the minimum qualification for registration as a pharmacist with a State Pharmacy Council, which is what allows you to dispense prescription medicines in a retail chemist.
- Hospital pharmacyHospital pharmacies employ diploma holders in dispensing, ward stock control, and counselling patients on how their medicines should be taken.
- Pharmaceutical industryManufacturing units recruit for production, packaging and quality-control roles, where the analytical work of the diploma applies directly.
- Higher studyD.Pharm holders can join B.Pharm in the second year through AKTU's lateral-entry counselling, with at least 45% in the diploma (40% for SC and ST candidates), and go on to M.Pharm.

What is the eligibility for D.Pharm at Banaras Institute of Pharmacy?
You need to have passed 10+2 (Intermediate) with Physics and Chemistry, and either Biology or Mathematics.
How long is the D.Pharm course?
Two years, full-time, followed by 500 hours of practical training. There are 11 subjects, 10 of them with a practical exam.
Is the institute approved by the Pharmacy Council of India?
Yes. Banaras Institute of Pharmacy is approved by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), New Delhi, under institution code 4351, and affiliated to the Board of Technical Education, Uttar Pradesh (BTEUP) under code 4051. Both codes can be checked against the regulators' own registers, and the current approval and affiliation letters are published on the Documents page.
How do I get admission?
Through JEECUP. Apply for the entrance exam under Group E1 (Biology) or Group E2 (Mathematics), register for counselling after the result, and add Banaras Institute of Pharmacy to your choices. If a seat here is allotted to you, accept it and report to the institute with your documents.
How many seats are there?
60 seats are sanctioned on the D.Pharm programme, rising to 66 with the EWS quota.
What are the fees?
Tuition is ₹60,000 a year, or ₹1,20,000 for the two years. JEECUP charges ₹250 to register for counselling and ₹3,000 to accept an allotted seat; both are paid to JEECUP, not to the institute. Examination, registration, hostel and transport charges are confirmed at admission.
Are scholarships available for the D.Pharm programme?
Yes, through two separate routes that can be pursued together. The College Trust awards a merit scholarship to students securing 60% or above in the qualifying examination. Separately, the Uttar Pradesh post-matric scholarship covers SC, ST, OBC, General and Minority categories, with an annual family income ceiling of ₹2,50,000 for SC and ST and ₹2,00,000 for the rest; D.Pharm students apply under the Post Matric (Other Than Intermediate) head on scholarship.up.gov.in, and the institute verifies the admission and fee details.
Can I register as a pharmacist after completing D.Pharm?
Yes. After the diploma and 500 hours of practical training, you apply to the Uttar Pradesh Pharmacy Council, at apps.uppc.in, to register as a pharmacist. No exit exam is required at present.
Can I continue to B.Pharm afterwards?
Yes. D.Pharm holders can join B.Pharm in the second year through lateral entry. In Uttar Pradesh this is through AKTU's UPTAC counselling, which asks for at least 45% in D.Pharm (40% for SC and ST candidates).
